Somewhere between the unexpected earthquake and the uninspiring hurricane, DC’s hottest VIPs stepped out to get a sneak peak of Opera Ultra Lounge, the district’s newest hotspot making nightlife headlines. And while I’m not usually impressed with a plethora of local celebs, in this instance I don’t use the term VIP lightly. Between DC Real Housewife Cat Ommanney (you know, the British one) and Paul Wharton (you know, the friend with the crazy fabulous hair), Fresh FM’s Tommy McFly and Kelly Collis, eyebrow guru to the stars, Erwin Gowmez, and Fox 5’s Will Thomas, everyone who’s anyone hit 14th and I ST NW to get a glimpse of the self-proclaimed “theatre of life.”
I’ll admit that I thought this lounge would be a little bit bigger, but what it lacked in space it more than made up for in over-the-top décor and lighting. Designed by famed interior designer François Frossard, the ambiance inside Opera is much like the mood set by Frossard’s other world famous lounges, which include Prive, Opium, Set, and Mansion in South Beach. And consistent with the South Beach music scene, Opera’s slightly intense Funktion One Sound System actually made the ground shake. It begs the question: did we actually have an earthquake or was that just Opera’s sound check?
In short I would say this ultra cool ultra club’s underground appeal makes it worthy of DC socialites and partygoers’ time (and money). The bottles aren’t cheap, but I would say the best way to enjoy this circular-shaped oasis of house music and VIPs is from the comfort of your uber chic table. Opening weekend is September 8th – 10th so party on, fabulous people! xo – KC
