Friday Round Up: Bubbles & Treats

Happy Friday! For this week’s round-up, I thought it would be appropriate to throw in some tricks and treats! The treats were easy to find, but instead of tricks, I went with bubbly.  Enjoy some Bubbles & Treats and have a wonderful weekend!

Dolcezza Debuts New Flavors – including Pumpkin Gelato!

With just a few days before Hurricane Sandy makes her Frankenstorm debut, I thought it might be fun to serve up some tasty gelato before it’s far too cold, rainy and miserable to even think about it.

Robb Duncan, the artisanal gelato maker and co-owner of Dolcezza, is back at it with a series of yummy gelatos you won’t be able to find anywhere else in DC.  First, in keeping with the tradition of fall flavors, Robb is featuring an Heirloom Neck Pumpkin gelato sourced from a local Maryland farm and hand-made in small batches every morning.  After smothering the pumpkins in a freshly ground spice bath of cinnamon, all spice, clove, nutmeg, muscovado sugar and local ginger, Duncan roasts them at 450 degrees in the oven until tender, and then purees the pumpkin and spice mix before adding the milk, cream and sugar to spin the mixture into gelato.  $5 for a small, $6.15 for a large and the $58 for the gallon (Georgetown location only).

And this winter, Dolcezza will also introduce the Cucumber Tarragon Gin sorbetto featuring Green Hat Gin; the Thai Basil Jalapeño sorbetto incorporating Gordy’s Pickles, and the Penn Quarter Porter gelato with DC Brau in the recipe.  The perfect nightcap, wouldn’t you agree?

It’s National Champagne Day! Celebrate at Proof!

Did you know there is a Champagne Bureau in the US?  No?  Well there is – and they created National Champagne Day as an opportunity to introduce novices to authentic Champagne and allow connoisseurs a chance to taste rare vintages. 

To celebrate, Penn Quarter’s fabulous wine-centric restaurant, Proof, will be offering several exceptional champagnes at 40% off the glass and by the bottle this evening from 5:30 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Wine Director Joe Quinn is very pleased to offer the 2004 vintage of Louis Roederer Cristal – which received a 97-point rating from the Wine Advocate (and is a Jay-Z favorite)  – for $40 a glass in the bar as well as the dining room.  In addition, to highlight the many excellent grower Champagnes in the market, Proof will offer the 2002 Gimonnet Special Club for $14 a glass.
